Glaucoma

Glaucoma

A progressive optic nerve disease that, if untreated, can lead to a characteristic narrowing of the visual field and blindness. It only causes symptoms in advanced stages. The essence of the disease is the accelerated destruction of ganglion cells due to abnormally elevated intraocular pressure and hypoxia and ischemic damage to the optic nerve head.

The normal pressure in a healthy eye is 12-21 mmHg. This is due to the balance between production and drainage. Primary glaucoma can be open-angle or closed-angle or congenital. Glaucoma that develops in association with other diseases, as a side effect of medication, or in connection with interventions is called secondary glaucoma.

In a glaucoma attack (acute angle-closure glaucoma), it can rise to 50-70 mmHg. In this case, severe pain in the affected eye and forehead, blurred vision, rainbow halos around light sources, and possibly nausea and vomiting occur.

Our screening test is aimed at preventing serious disease.

The goal of our glaucoma care is to prevent functionally significant vision loss, preserve the patient's vision for the rest of their life, and thereby preserve their quality of life.
